To move a web application from a development environment to a production machine you can use the “Publish …” command. This option is available in Visual Studio 2005 and 2008, just right-click on the web project in the Solution Explorer. It copies all necessary files to a directory, without copying unnecessary source code files, very useful.

It has irritated me at least 3 years that I could not leave out certain files, such as web.config. I want to copy web.config only with the first deployment. But the publish command always copies it, so I have to remove it manually every time. Then I realized that the solution is really simple ! You can change the Build Action from Content to None, which means that it is not being published…
