If you get an 'Access denied' message when you try to access a (SharePoint) site on the server locally, i.e. the Central Administration, while using correct credentials. Check out this knowledge base article by Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887993

Method 2 (Disable loopback check) might be the solution for your problem. Ususally executing step 1 is enough to resolve the issue. In short:

Step 1: To set the DisableLoopbackCheck registry entry to 1
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
3. Right-click DisableLoopbackCheck, and then click Modify.
4. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
