Access denied error after deploying an ASP.NET website

Modified: 2008/01/11 12:39 by vanthoog - Categorized as: ASP.NET
Sometimes, after deploying an ASP.NET website on a production server, you may get the following error:

Access is denied: 'mydll'.

This may be caused by the index server. When the index server is running, it may lock files in the temporary ASP.NET files folder (e.g. for .NET 2.0 the "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files" folder). A deployment of a new version of an existing website may force .NET to regenerate the temporary ASP.NET files, which will fail with the mentioned error when these files are locked by the index server.

The solution is simple. Just stop and restart the index server.

This problem has been documented in the Microsoft knowledge base for .NET 1.0 in the article 329065.
